MEET THE FOUNDERS

TEAMMATES FIRST. COACHES TOGETHER.

Built on years of friendship, mutual respect, and a shared love of throwing, John and Troy’s partnership brings both purpose and camaraderie to LTA. They challenge each other, learn from each other, and bring that same spirit to the athletes they coach.

John Blackwell, LTA co-founder

Co-Founder

JOHN BLACKWELL

A University of Louisville graduate in 2005, John competed as a shot put specialist and hammer thrower. His collegiate coaching career spanned 2005–2014, with roles at North Iowa Area Community College, Bellarmine University, Notre Dame College, and Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he launched the program in 2012 and coached through 2014. He moved into private coaching in 2014.

At LTA, John leads Performance- and Elite-level development and collaborates with Troy in coaching Development-level throwers. His technical coaching and program-building experience help athletes connect their preparation to competition performance.

Troy Williams, LTA co-founder

Co-Founder

TROY WILLIAMS

A University of Louisville graduate in 2004, Troy competed as a discus specialist and also threw shot put and hammer. His coaching background includes middle school, high school, AAU, and USATF competition, with coaching experience at Louisville Track Club and Built 4 This Track Club. He brings an understanding of the scholastic throwing experience and the needs of athletes and their families.

At LTA, Troy leads Foundation-level development, helping athletes establish safe habits, understand their event, and build the foundations of the whole throw. He and John collaborate in coaching Development-level athletes as their technique, understanding, and independence grow.

THE EXPERIENCE BEHIND THE STANDARD

John and Troy share a passion for coaching, athlete development, and helping young people grow in confidence and independence. Their experience as Division I teammates, combined with their distinct coaching backgrounds, informs a shared commitment: better throws, stronger people, and lessons that last beyond competition.

01

DIVISION I EXPERIENCE

John and Troy competed together at the University of Louisville from 2001–2004, both earning letters each year of their collegiate careers. Their experience spans shot put, discus, and hammer, bringing firsthand understanding of collegiate training and competition to LTA.

02

SCHOLASTIC & YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Troy has coached middle school, high school, AAU, and USATF athletes, with previous coaching experience at Louisville Track Club. He brings a strong understanding of the scholastic thrower’s experience—and the questions and decisions parents face while supporting a developing athlete.

03

COLLEGIATE COACHING & RESULTS

John coached collegiately from 2005–2014 before moving into private coaching. At Bellarmine University, his coaching record included three NCAA provisional qualifiers, a GLVC Field Athlete of the Year, and school-record performances.

04

PROGRAM BUILDING & ATHLETE SUPPORT

John served as head track and field coach at Notre Dame College and launched Kentucky Wesleyan’s program in 2012. His experience in recruiting, admissions, and academic support complements Troy’s understanding of youth development and family needs.

SHARED STANDARDS. INDIVIDUAL COACHING.

01

WE LISTEN FIRST

Understanding what you feel helps us make sense of what we see.

02

WE EXPLAIN THE WHY

You should understand the purpose of a correction and how it connects to your throw.

03

WE COACH WITH PURPOSE

Clear priorities guide the work. Feedback should help you act, not leave you overloaded.

04

WE BUILD INDEPENDENCE

The goal is a thrower who understands their preparation and can compete with confidence.
